The Lagos State Police Command has moved to calm residents of Mushin following a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) incident that sparked tension in the area on Monday.
Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, gave the assurance after visiting Oke Mushin for an on-the-spot assessment of the scene where a vehicle was reportedly damaged by an explosion in the early hours of the day.
The incident, which occurred on Wey Street, caused panic among residents and traders, prompting the deployment of operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit.
According to the command, the operatives were mobilised after a distress call alleging an explosion involving a vehicle parked in the community.
Police said the area was immediately secured and cordoned off while bomb disposal experts carried out a comprehensive search, assessment and recovery operation.
Speaking during the visit, Fatai assured residents that the location had been thoroughly swept and certified safe.
He said the EOD-CBRN team found no further threat after completing its operation, urging residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear.
“The area has been searched and declared safe. There is no cause for alarm,” the police commissioner said.
Residents had earlier reported hearing an explosion involving a Toyota Sienna vehicle parked in the neighbourhood. The vehicle owner was said to have sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Witnesses claimed the incident occurred when the owner attempted to start the vehicle, although police authorities said investigations were ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the occurrence.
The command said materials recovered from the scene would form part of its ongoing investigation.
Fatai reiterated the commitment of the Lagos State Police Command to maintaining security across the state, assuring residents that proactive measures remain in place to prevent and respond to security threats.
Also speaking, the Baale of Oke Mushin, Chief Tajudeen Lasisi Farounbi, said he received a distress call shortly after 6 a.m. and immediately alerted security agencies.
He commended the swift response of police operatives and urged residents to cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to unravel the circumstances behind the incident.
