The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended four individuals allegedly involved in a major visa scam that defrauded over 100 people of approximately ₦500 million under the pretense of securing employment-based travel documents to Canada and Australia.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects; Blessing Wefsutu (27), Chineye Christian (36), Archibong Udeme Ifereke (23), and Maurine Peter (25) were arrested following a report initially lodged at the Ago Okota Police Division.
The case was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti for a detailed probe.
According to the police in a statement signed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command’s spokesperson; the suspects are said to be employees of an educational consultancy firm based in Ago Okota.
“Investigators disclosed that they collected huge sums from unsuspecting victims with fake assurances of facilitating work visas abroad.
“Preliminary findings point to the involvement of more accomplices who are currently being traced.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has urged residents to be cautious when dealing with travel agents and to always verify the legitimacy of such agencies before parting with money.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to cracking down on fraudulent operations and bringing all those responsible to book, adding that the ongoing investigation will ensure that justice is served.
The police have assured the public that efforts to recover funds and apprehend remaining suspects are in full gear.
