Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, has died at the age of 91.
The highly respected traditional ruler breathed his last on Sunday, July 1, 2025, bringing an end to an extraordinary reign that spanned 64 years, beginning on April 2, 1960.
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona hailed from the royal House of Anikinaiya and was regarded as one of Nigeria’s most enduring monarchs.
His death occurred just hours after the passing of his long-time friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, who reportedly died in a London medical facility after a prolonged illness.
Throughout his lifetime, Oba Adetona was celebrated for his visionary leadership, principled stand on national issues, and steadfast dedication to the progress of Ijebuland and the Yoruba people.
His passing marks the close of a significant era in Nigeria’s traditional institution.
