Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rovers State has publicly acknowledged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike for supporting his emergence as governor, stating that the minister “discovered” him.
Fubara made the remarks in Lagos while receiving the Man of the Year Award at the 2025 New Telegraph Awards ceremony.
Describing the occasion as significant, the governor expressed appreciation to those who have supported him, noting that leadership often requires restraint and sacrifice.
“Today is a special day for me and for everyone who has believed in me,” he said. “Some may interpret certain decisions as weakness, but I see them as necessary for peace and stability.”
He stated that his approach to governance has been guided by the need to promote peace, protect shared interests, and ensure the survival and progress of the state.
In a notable moment during his speech, Fubara dedicated the award to Wike.
“I also dedicate this award to someone who discovered me. The Honourable Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. He discovered me, and that discovery gave me the platform I have today. Thank you for everything,” he said.
The governor also thanked the people of Rivers State for their support and maturity, which he said had contributed to the progress recorded so far.
Organisers of the award said Fubara was selected after what they described as a thorough screening and evaluation process. In a citation read at the event, the newspaper commended the governor’s development initiatives since assuming office in May 2023.
According to the citation, the administration has prioritised infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development across the state, with particular emphasis on road projects aimed at improving connectivity and stimulating growth in rural communities.
The organisers described the award as recognition of the governor’s leadership and commitment to governance.
