Justice Rahman Oshodi of a Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja is expected to rule tomorrow , Thursday, October 9, 2025, on whether to admit key digital evidence tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the ongoing trial of the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele is being tried alongside his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, on a 19-count charge bordering on alleged fraud and misconduct leveled against them by the EFCC.
The ruling date was fixed after a heated exchange among lawyers over the authenticity and certification of documents retrieved from the mobile phone of a former Executive Assistant to the CBN Governor.
At the last sitting , the EFCC counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, continued the examination of one of the agency’s operatives, Mr. Alvan Gurumnaan, who narrated how investigators traced a series of digital communications linked to the case.
Among the exhibits were WhatsApp conversations allegedly exchanged between key individuals. The EFCC witness clarified that the abbreviation “PCS” found in the chats represented “piece,” a code used to indicate a unit of ₦1,000.
Further forensic analysis of the Executive Assistant’s mobile phone revealed conversations with a certain Mr. Eric, in which instructions were issued to deliver $400,000 “for Oga.”
According to Gurumnaan, he admitted to receiving and handing over the said amount, while the EFCC continues efforts to track down and interrogate the elusive Eboh.
While some documents dated February 2024 were accepted into evidence without opposition, another set of records obtained from Adetola’s device faced strong objections from the defence team.
Lead defence counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, and Kazeem Gbadamosi, SAN, argued that the documents lacked proper certification as required under the Evidence Act, urging the court to reject them.
Justice Oshodi is expected to give his ruling on the matter later today.
