The Nigeria Marine Coastguard Volunteer Service (NMCGVS), a regimented seaborne para-military humanitarian lifesaving organization, has called for help and partnership across to several groups and the Lagos State Government, on the urgent need to help equip them with the necessary tools and logistics to effectively combat drowning in Nigeria.
NMCGVS personnel have dedicated themselves to a rigorous six-month professional training program in conjunction with the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island, Lagos. This training includes regimented seaborne rescue swimming, preparing them to undertake national assignments aimed at preventing and responding to drowning incidents across Nigeria. However, despite their commitment and ongoing training, the lack of essential equipment and logistical support is severely hindering their ability to perform their life-saving duties.
The rainy season is upon us, and as witnessed recently, Lagos State and numerous other states in Nigeria are experiencing significant flooding. Historically, 33 out of the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), face severe flooding during the peak of the rainy season. This escalating situation heightens the risk of drowning incidents, making it imperative that immediate action is taken to support the NMCGVS in their critical mission.
They appeal to the World Health Organization, ECOWAS, and the Lagos State Government to lead by example and partner with them in this vital cause. Supporting them by providing the NMCGVS with the necessary equipment and logistics will enable these dedicated rescue swimmers to perform their duties efficiently and effectively, ultimately saving lives and mitigating the devastating effects of flooding.
There is also a dedicated on-going advocacy by the media on raising awareness about the urgent need to combat drowning through the provision of adequate support to the NMCGVS. This is not just a mission but a national assignment that requires immediate and drastic provisions to commence operations without delay.
