Nigerian Air Force Earns Praise For Key Role In Combating Illegal Arms Proliferation

In a recent development, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has garnered significant commendation for its vital efforts in curbing the influx and proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria.

Major General Abba Dikko (Rtd), the National Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), extended his appreciation during a courtesy visit to Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), at the NAF Headquarters.

Major General Dikko highlighted the indispensable role played by the NAF, emphasizing their crucial support in the transportation, secure storage, and protection of seized weapons.

This assistance has substantially alleviated the operational burden on the Centre. General Dikko stated, “The NAF’s unparalleled commitment, diligence, and support in eliminating small arms and light weapons from our nation through airlifts, collaborative efforts, mutual synergy, and proactive intelligence gathering are deserving of recognition.” Additionally, he called upon CAS to utilize his influence for the passage of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill 2023, currently under consideration in the Senate of the National Assembly.

Air Marshal Abubakar acknowledged the enduring and constructive partnership between the NAF and the Centre, which was established in May 2021. He underscored the Centre’s timely creation in addressing the direct link between the proliferation of small arms and heightened insecurity.

The CAS commended the Centre’s efforts in curtailing the illegal circulation of arms within Nigeria, asserting, “Any initiative aimed at controlling the spread of small arms and light weapons is a welcomed step toward a prosperous and peaceful Nigeria.” Furthermore, he praised the Centre’s establishment of a comprehensive database for tracking legitimate and illicit arms in the country, a resource that greatly assists security agencies and the Federal Government in managing weapons and ammunition effectively.

Air Marshal Abubakar reaffirmed the NAF’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Centre as it continues to fulfill its mission.

Edward Gabkwet, Air Commodore, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, shared these insights on the 7th of September 2023.
