A Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted a 35-year-old man, identified as Deji Adesanya, and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment for unlawful dealing in cannabis sativa.
Deji Adesanya was sentenced by Justin Akintayo Aluko, who presided over the court after he pleaded guilty to one count charge leveled against him by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The convicted Deji Adesanya, according to the NDLEA’s operatives was arrested with 5 Kilogrames of the prohibited substance at Safecourt Apartment ikate -Elegushi, Lagos State, on November 22, 2025.
The prosecutor, while arranging the convict, told the court that his crime was contrary to and punishable under Section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Upon the arraignment of the convict, he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Based on his guilty plea, the prosecutor, Barrister Peter M. Ekuri, reviewed the facts of the case, as well, tendered several exhibits in the matter.
The prosecutor thereafter urged the court to convict and sentence him according to his guilty plea and the exhibits tendered in the charge.
However, his lawyer, Barrister R.M.J. Nyiew, pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy in sentencing her client.
She urged the court to consider the convict’s early guilty plea, and that her client had became remorseful and vowed not to engage in any illegal activities.
She therefore urged to court to grant her client a non-custodian sentence.
Justice Aluko after listening to the counsel’s mercy plea and after confirmed from the prosecutor that the convict was a first time convict without any previous criminal records, sentenced the convict to six months.
The judge however order the convict to pay the sum of N450, 000, in-lieu of the jail-term.
The charge against the convict reads: “that you ADESANYA ‘m’ 35 years old on or about the 22nd Day of November, 2025, at Safecourt Apartment ikate -Elegushi, Lagos State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, without lawful authority dealt in 5 Kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, a Narcotic Drug similar to Cocaine, LSD and Heroin and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”
