Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a critical global threat, jeopardizing decades of advancements in medicine, agriculture, and public health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that AMR could result in 10 million deaths annually by 2050, while the World Bank projects economic losses of $1 trillion per year by 2030. Low- and middle-income countries, with weak regulations and limited awareness, are particularly vulnerable.
In agriculture, excessive antimicrobial use fosters resistant pathogens in animals and leaves harmful residues in food, posing significant risks to public health and food safety. In Nigeria, widespread misuse of antibiotics in livestock farming is a key contributor to the rise of resistant bacteria. This pressing issue calls for targeted awareness campaigns and the enforcement of stronger policies.
The Role of Citizens in Tackling AMR
The application of a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health to foster global collaboration and drive political action against AMR.
As an advocate and consumer, I have taken proactive measures to combat AMR within the meat value chain:
• Awareness Campaigns: Educating friends, family, and stakeholders on antibiotic misuse via social media.
• Antibiotic Stewardship Advocacy: Encouraging veterinarians, including colleagues at abattoirs, to adopt robust stewardship programs.
• Food Safety Education: Promoting proper meat handling and cooking practices during interactions with butchers, herders, and processors.
• Policy Advocacy: Supporting stronger regulations and sustainable agricultural practices.
Future Commitments and Recommendations
To bolster efforts against AMR, the following strategies are recommended:
1. Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with government agencies, farmers, and civil society to promote responsible antimicrobial use.
2. Support for Responsible Practices: Highlight and support producers using sustainable farming methods while encouraging consumers to opt for responsibly produced meat.
3. Capacity Building: Advocate for ongoing training for veterinarians and agricultural professionals on AMR guidelines.
4. Sustainable Agriculture and Diets: Promote farming practices that minimize antimicrobial reliance and encourage sustainable diets aligned with SDG 12.
5. Public Awareness: Organize educational programmes to inform local communities about the dangers of antibiotic misuse in livestock production.
Call to Action
Addressing AMR requires a united and sustained effort. Individuals can contribute by making informed purchasing decisions, supporting policies that enforce antibiotic stewardship, and driving demand for sustainably produced food.
As a society it is essential we commit to engaging butchers and meat sellers in discussions about responsible antibiotic use and sourcing practices. As responsible citizens we should prioritize purchasing antibiotic-free products and supporting certification programmes like “Certified Humane” or “Animal Welfare Approved.” Additionally, promoting community-supported agriculture (CSA) programmes to foster transparency and sustainable practices.
Combatting AMR is a shared responsibility that extends beyond policies to include individual action and collective advocacy. Community education, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy are unique contributions to effectively make the conversation to go global. Together, we can safeguard public health, food safety, and economic stability for generations to come.
