The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended 24 individuals in connection with plans to stage unauthorised Egungun festivals in different parts of the state.
According to the Command, 12 of the suspects were picked up in the Oregun axis after they allegedly circulated posters, handbills and social-media notices under the banner “OJE PARAPO OF OREGUN,” announcing an Egungun festival and imposing restrictions on public movement and basic freedoms in the area.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Command reiterated that it will not allow any group to enforce unlawful directives or engage in actions capable of infringing on the rights of Lagos residents.
Adebisi noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the suspension of the planned Oregun festival, citing its potential to disrupt public peace and create safety concerns.
“This advisory is to make it unmistakably clear that no group has the authority to take the law into its own hands or restrict the free movement of other Nigerians within the State,” the statement said.
“The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the fundamental rights of all residents.”
The Command also cautioned individuals or groups planning unapproved gatherings or activities likely to cause unrest to halt such plans immediately.
Referring to the circulated notices fixing the Oregun Egungun festival for November 27 and 28, 2025, Adebisi explained that the police reviewed the palpable tension already building among residents and concluded that the event must not take place. She added that the decision was necessary to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
“No traditional event that has the potential to incite fear, provoke unrest, or threaten the peace of Lagos will be allowed to hold,” she insisted.
In a related incident, another set of 12 suspects were arrested in Mafoluku, Oshodi, under the Makinde Division, after similar posters were distributed in the community on November 23, allegedly aimed at causing disturbance.
The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed that the organisers of the Oregun Egungun festival must discontinue their plans, stressing that security agencies can no longer guarantee safety if such activities proceed.
He also described the anxiety created among residents as unacceptable and warned that anyone attempting to undermine the peace and stability of Lagos State will face the full force of the law.
The Command urged the public to remain calm and continue with their daily activities without fear, while encouraging residents to promptly report any suspicious movement or activities to the police.
