Justice Rahmon Oshodi of an Ikeja Special Offences Court on Wednesday remanded a man, Emmanuel Okpo, who pleaded guilty to engaging in cryptocurrency fraud
The Judge ordered that Okpo should be kept at the Ikoyi custodial facility pending judgment in the case on June 16.
Okpo pleaded guilty to a count charge of possession of fraudulent documents.
During review of the facts of the case, Mr Gabriel Akogu, counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is prosecuting the defendant, told the court that the defendant was among suspected cybercriminals arrested at Awoyaya, Lagos State, on Aug. 29, 2022.
“He was among those arrested for their involvement in cryptocurrency fraud and other computer-related fraud.
“Following his arrest, a HP laptop recovered from him was analysed in his presence and fraudulent documents were printed out, which showed that he represented himself as David Steven to perpetrate online fraud.
“The defendant admitted to engaging in dating scam and confessed to have benefitted N350,000,” he said.
The prosecution counsel tendered in evidence Okpo’s statement, a bundle of fraudulent documents printed out from his laptop, the laptop and two drafts of N200,000 issued as restitution.
There was no objection from defence counsel, Mr Nathaniel Izenobi.
Consequently, they were admitted as exhibits against Okpo.
