As the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) continues to strengthen telecommunications across the country, the Commission has constituted a new Governing Board, which has now held its induction retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The retreat was organised to align the Board’s governance priorities with the Commission’s strategic mandates, while deepening collaboration between the Board and Management. The retreat was chaired by NCC Board member, Chief Idris Ibikunle Olorunnimbe.
The induction programme provided a platform for the Board to engage extensively with Management on the Commission’s regulatory focus and strategic direction, reaffirming the NCC’s critical role in driving the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.
Designed to strengthen institutional, regulatory, and governance effectiveness, the retreat featured in-depth and forward-looking deliberations centred on the legal, governance, and regulatory frameworks guiding the telecommunications industry.
Experts with extensive experience facilitated the sessions. Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye led a comprehensive review of the Nigerian Communications Act (2003), offering insights into its provisions and continued relevance in addressing contemporary regulatory challenges.
In his presentation, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, underscored key principles of effective board governance and oversight within the context of a national telecommunications regulator.
Providing a global perspective, Prof. Hyacinth Nwana examined the evolving role of regulators, highlighting the future of regulation in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN, also delivered a session on the core principles of corporate governance, emphasising accountability, transparency, and strategic leadership.
Discussions during the retreat were described as rigorous and candid, with strong emphasis on governance frameworks, regulatory credibility, and a sharper focus on delivering measurable outcomes for consumers, industry stakeholders, and the broader digital economy.
The induction retreat further highlights the Board’s commitment to effective oversight, sound governance, and strategic leadership in advancing the NCC’s mandate of promoting innovation, competition, and inclusive digital growth across Nigeria.
