The Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has held a strategic retreat in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to align its operations with national digital priorities and reaffirm the Commission’s central role in advancing Nigeria’s digital economy.
The retreat, presided over by the NCC Chairman, Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, provided a platform for the Board and Management to deliberate on key issues bordering on regulatory oversight and the effective governance of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Eminent facilitators led critical sessions during the retreat. Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye took participants through a comprehensive review of the Nigerian Communications Act (2003), ensuring that the new Board members were firmly grounded in the legal and regulatory framework guiding the sector. Paul Usoro, SAN, stressed the importance of best practices in strengthening accountability and improving strategic decision-making within regulatory institutions.
Offering a global perspective, Professor Hyacinth Nwana examined emerging international regulatory trends and the evolving responsibilities of telecommunications regulators in a rapidly changing digital landscape. Professor Fabian Ajogwu, SAN, underscored the need for strong corporate governance principles, noting that they are essential for institutional resilience and optimal performance.
Board members actively engaged in discussions focused on keeping the NCC responsive to technological innovations, market competition, and the rising expectations of telecom consumers, as the Commission continues to steer Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.
